Both USAID and the Government of Peru identified the Port of Callao as the project of highest priority for PRA. This is a 30-year, $360 million concession to build and operate a new, state-of-the are, container terminal that will add more than 600,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units) per year in capacity to the Port of Callao, the larges and most important port serving Peru. The comprehensive, technical, legal and financial transaction design was completed by PRA in March 2006. The concession contract was successfully awarded in June of 2006 to a consortium led by P&O/Dubai Ports that offered the lowest tariff and US$144 million in additional investments over the concession period.
PHASE I: (between year one and three of the concession)
- 228,000 m2 concession area
- Construction of 650 meter front berth with 2 unloading docks
- 750,000 TEU capacity per year
- 14 meters deep dredging of sea floor
- Installation of six gantry cranes
- Installation of 10 mobile cranes
- Installation of 24 tractor-trailers
- Installation of 2 reach stackers
PHASE II: (based on demand)
- Extension of concession area to 303,000 meters squared
- Extending front berth to 960 meters in length with one additional unloading dock
- Increased annual capacity of 1,250,000 TEUs

- Improving road access
- Protection and security system implementation in common areas
- Development of logistical activity zones
- Implementation of community information systems

- High levels of service
- Technical and professional development of port workers
- Productive employment generation
- Creation of a regional hub for western South America
The most important dock in the south container terminal will have the depth of 10.5 meters in the marina and will be able to receive PANAMAX and POSTPANAMAX vessels as shown in the table below:
STIMULATION TO EXPORATION
This project will elevate the competitiveness of Peruvian exports by reducing transaction cost by US$380 million. Additionally, maritime shipping costs will decrease as the new container terminal will receive POSTPANAMAX vessels which transport 4,500 to 6,000 TEUs per vessel.
- The depth of the shipping wall is the distance between the water level and the ocean bottom
- The draft is the part of the ship under water
- A PANAMAX has a draft of 12.5 meters (requiring a water level of 14 meters)
- The concessionaire will dredge the access canal, working zones, and docking areas to a minimum of 14 meters
- The concessionaire will construct the container terminal in way that will allow the dredging in the second phase to reach 16 meters in depth
