The Ayacucho Economic Corridor is located in the central-southern Andes mountain range of Peru. The city of Ayacucho, which is also the capital of the department, is located at 2,761 meters above sea level (9,058 feet) with a dry, temperate climate and year-round average of 17.5ºC (63.5ºF) with a maximum temperature of 24ºC (75.2 ºF) and a minimum of 11ºC (51.8ºF). Ayacucho boasts 2,000 to 2,600 hours of sunlight a year and a relative humidity of 55% making it a very comfortable and attractive location.
The capital is located 543 kilometers from Lima easily accessible in 8 or 9 hours by one of 10 bus companies (of which six provide bus cama) by the Los Libertadores road which connects to the Pan-American South Highway in the city of Pisco. There are two airline companies with early morning departures allowing passengers to arrive in Lima in 60 minutes.
Ayacucho joins Junín and the Carretera Central highway through the Ayacucho-Huanta-Huancayo route and Huancavelica through a partially paved local road. Ayacucho joins Apurímac and Cusco through the Ayacucho – Andahuaylas -Abancay - Cusco road and the Amazon Jungle region through the Quinua – Tambo – Ayna – San Francisco road. Clearly, Ayacucho is strategically located to serve as a regional trading access point between the central sierra and the south (Junín and Huancavelica on one side and Apurímac and Cusco on the other) as well as with the coast (Pisco, Ica) and the jungle.
The most important irrigation project of the region is the Cachi River Project that will provide permanent water to 14,000 hectares in the high altitude (3,200 to 4,000 meters above sea level or 10,500 to 13,123 feet) and middle altitude (2,600 – 3,190 meters above sea level) in the Huamanga province. The project is in the final phase due to new priorities by the Regional Government which makes Ayacucho an attractive location for the development of new agricultural projects.
The Ayacucho ESC opened in October 2000. The ESC works with business clients to facilitate access to information on markets; provide technical and management assistance; organize supply; and act as an aggressive broker of deals between foreign and domestic buyers and investors, on the one hand, and local producers, on the other. The principal objective of the ESC is to build confidence and effective working linkages between business enterprises and agrarian producers involved in the following businesses:
