Articulation of Huancavelica potato producers to Snacks América Latina
Once Snack América Latina (owner of Frito Lay) identified a significant demand for capiro potatos, ESC Huánuco decided to provide support in identifying production areas and in the harvesting and post-harvesting stages to increase productivity and quality.
Through this assistance on technological transfer and output organization, a close relationship was established between Frito Lay and local producers. The signature of purchase commitments has benefited thousands of peasants in Pillao, La Libertad-Choquecocha, Ambo, Amarilis, and Pachitea by establishing higher prices and promoting an increase in production capacity.
Interview with Lucio Ramírez Maíz, producer of the peasant community of Huanucalla – Pillao, District of Chinchao – Acomayo, Province and Department of Huánuco
How has this new market benefited local producers?
A price is fixed even before harvesting takes place. Then the producer and the company sign a contract. Payments are always timely. Guaranteed prices allow us to invest confidently. Indeed the commercializing company plays a very important role.
What are the main problems facing local farmers?
A major problem is the existence of potato diseases like rancha, oidium, and alternaria. We also face insufficient financing and low prices for potatoes not intended for industrial uses.
What is the outlook for producers from the peasant community of Huanucalla – Pillao, District of Chinchao – Acomayo, Province and Department of Huánuco?
We expect to improve yields and quality and to strengthen our links with industrial markets.
