Export of 5,200 wood carved frames to the U.S. creates 100 jobs in Pucallpa
Although the PRA does not operate in Pucallpa anymore, it is still involved in the production of certified wood in the Cusco-Madre de Dios Corridor.
Allpa, Peru’s leading exporter of handicrafts, has forged an Alliance with NCS American Forestal, a wood company based in Pucallpa, to produce 5,200 wood framed mirrors for Southern Living at Home (SLAH), which sells by catalog in the U.S.
One year ago Allpa, with the support of ESC - Pucallpa, conducted tests and identified the Cachimbo Rojo variety as the best wood for this purpose. Afterwards an agreement was established with NCS American Forestal to treat dried Wood and assemble frames, as a result of which more than 40 jobs were created in 5 months. The frames’ carved ornaments were made by 60 craftsmen in their own homes during six months. A productive chain generating a high value added was thus set in motion. Doylith Macahuachi Ricopata was hired by the PRA to provide technical assistance to carvers and operators on quality standardization for export to the U.S. market.
