The Ancash Economic Corridor is located in Peru’s central west area. Geography highlights include the Callejón del Huaylas, a valley extending along the Santa River, with the Black Range (Cordillera Negra) to the west and the White Range (Cordillera Blanca) to the east. The latter stands out for its numerous glacial lagoons and especially for Peru’s highest peak, the Huascarán (6,768 m.a.s.l.), located in Yungay. The Callejón de Huaylas also limits to the north with the Cañón del Pato. From that point, the Santa River takes a Northeast-Southwest course to the Pacific Ocean. The landscape in this area is magnificent.

The weather is mild-hot on the coast up to 2,900 m.a.s.l., with temperatures between 12°C and 24°C; mild-cold between 3,000 - 3,900 m.a.s.l., with temperatures between 6°C and 12°C (0°C in winter); cold - dry on the Andean plateau (puna) above 4,000 m.a.s.l., with temperatures below 6°C. Rains are seasonal between November and April. Humidity in the Costa is almost 100%, while in the Sierra it varies between 60% and 70%.

Access from Lima to Huaraz (407 km, 6 hours via asphalted highway) is through the Lima-Pativilca-Huaraz highway. Ancash is also connected by sea (Chimbote) and air (Anta and Chimbote).

ESC Ancash launched its activities in May 2007 thanks to a partnership between USAID - Peru, Sierra Exportadora and Compañía Minera Antamina. At the end of Phase 1 of the PRA, ESC Ancash continued to operate thanks to the contribution of Antamina and the Clinton Foundation. In the opening ceremony of Phase 2 of the PRA, Antamina and the Clinton Foundation signed an agreement with USAID through which they committed to continue promoting businesses in the Ancash Corridor.
