Cusco is located in Peru’s south Sierra. It has a variety of micro climates:

(a) On the west, the weather varies from arid to sub-humid as altitude increases. Rainfall reaches 70 mm on the lower ecological floors and 800 mm on the higher ones. Temperature is associated with altitude: for each 100 m in altitude, temperature decreases 0.48 ºC.

(b) In the Inter-Andean area, heavy rainfall is caused by rain-loaded clouds originated in the Selva and pushed into the region’s high mountains. The rain season runs from October to April.

(c) The northeastern part of the region (Province of Tayacaja) forms a special weather system due to its proximity to the Selva. Annual rainfall is around 2,000 mm. Temperatures are higher than in the rest of the Department.

Cusco stretches along the valley formed by the River Huatanay and the neighboring mountains. The weather is generally dry and mild. There are two distinct seasons: the dry season, from April to October, with sunny days and cold nights (average temperature: 13°C); and the rain season, from November to March (average temperature: 12°C). On sunny days the temperature reaches 20°C.

Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport receives flights from Lima, Arequipa, Puerto Maldonado, and Juliaca, as well as international flights from La Paz, Bolivia. It is the second busiest airport in the country after Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport. Cusco is also connected by railway with the cities of Puno and Arequipa. Finally, there are highways connecting Cusco with the cities of Puerto Maldonado, Arequipa, Abancay, and Puno. It is possible to reach Lima in 20 hours by highway through the Departments of Apurímac, Ayacucho, Ica, and Lima.

ESC Cusco is financed by Odebrecht and USAID.
