Located on Peru’s west central Sierra, Huancavelica is surrounded by the Lima, Ica, Ayacucho, and Junín Regions. Its geography, formed by valleys, creeks, high mountains, plateaus, and winding roads, is one of the most rugged in Peru. Its valleys have an altitude of around 1,950 m.a.s.l. and its mountains soar to over 5,000 m.a.s.l.
The region has a variety of micro climates:
- Western area: The weather varies from arid to sub-humid as altitude increases. Rainfall reaches 70mm on the lower ecological floors and 800mm on the higher ones. Altitude determines temperature: for each 100 m in altitude, temperature drops 0.48ºC.
- Inter-Andean area: Heavy rainfall is caused by rain-loaded clouds originated in the Selva and pushed into the region’s high mountains. The rain season runs from October to April.
- Northeastern area (Province of Tayacaja): Forms a special weather system due to its proximity to the Selva. Annual rainfall is around 2,000 mm. Temperatures are higher than in the rest of the Department.
Huancavelica has three main asphalt highways: Lima - Huancavelica (457 km, 11 hours by car); Ica - Huancavelica (12 hours by car); Ayacucho - Huancavelica (6 hours by car). Four railways connect Huancavelica with Lima: Huancayo, Villa de Arma - Chincha, Castrovirreyna – Ticrapo - Pisco and Rumichaca - Huaytara (Libertadores) - Pisco.
ESC Huancavelica launched its operations in June 2002 under an agreement between Compañía de Minas Buenaventura and USAID. Buenaventura continued supporting ESC Huancavelica when Phase 1 of the PRA ended, and in January 2010 it signed a new agreement with USAID, thus confirming its commitment to promoting businesses in the Huancavelica Corridor
