CSE Madre de Dios

The Madre de Dios Economic Corridor is located in eastern Peru. It is the only corridor under the project that is entirely located in the Selva (with areas in both the High and Low Selva). It limits to the South with Cusco and Puno, to the North with Ucayali and Brazil, to the West with Cusco, and to the East with Brazil and Bolivia. This part of the country, where the Andes descend abruptly into the Selva creating deep precipices, is particularly difficult for road building. Altitude is between 183 and 500 m.a.s.l. It is home to several national reserves, among them Manu and Tambopata Candamo.

The weather is hot and humid, with rains from November to April. Annual rainfall is over 1,000 mm. Masses of cold air from the southwest occasionally create temperatures as low as 8°C. The average annual temperature is 26°C (maximum 38°C in August and September, minimum 8°C).

The distance between Lima and Puerto Maldonado is 1,638 km. Recommended ground routes are: Lima – Arequipa - Cusco-Puerto Maldonado (2,024 km, 42 hours by ground transportation); and Lima – Nazca – Abancay – Cusco - Puerto Maldonado (1,619 km, 43 hours by ground transportation). There are also flights from Lima (1:30 hours) and Cusco (45 minutes).

ESC Madre de Dios is financed by Odebrecht and USAID
